Forgetting

I keep forgetting that Dreamwidth is a thing, so I don't post or comment because I've forgotten about it. I will catch up with people's journals this weekend, I promise!

  • I started (barely) my TESOL course today - that stands for Teaching English (to) Students (of) Other Languages. I got funding from Coursera to do the first part of the course, which will take about a month. Today I did the introduction, and wrote a short paper on why language is like cake, kind of an ice breaker assignment, and optional at that. Language really is like cake in a whole lot of ways!!

  • I've been browsing job ads for TESOL grads and despite the fact that the pay is about a third of what I'd make in Asia, I want to teach in South America. The dream job would be teaching in Cusco, Peru, which is 11,500 feet above sea level in the Andes, and which is only 75 miles from Machu Picchu, so I could visit it on weekends. Of course, this is a daydream; I'm unlikely to get such a job on my first go, but a girl can dream. My dreams put a smile on my face and hope in my heart.

  • Making steady progress learning Spanish. I'm hardly conversational yet, unless you want to have a conversation about what the girls in the green dresses are eating at the table with the blue chairs. :)
[Las niñas que llevan vestidos verdes comen fresas en la mesa con las sillas azules: (they're eating strawberries)] So cool to be able to write even a simple sentence in Spanish. I love learning languages SO much. ♥

  • The final copy of the Human Rights paperwork arrived in the mail today from the office in Winnipeg. All I have to do is sign and date two copies of the document and send them back, and then they'll be sent off to the people who illegally evicted me last October. Their actions, apparently, contravene Article 16 of the Manitoba Human Rights Code: you cannot deny housing to someone based on their mental health, and you certainly can't throw them out on the streets as they did.

Although I am determined to file this complaint against these bastards, I have my worries. My son still works for these people six months a year. In fact, he'll be arriving in the Arctic town where he works in two weeks time, and I'm guessing that my complaint will reach the lodge/restaurant where he works about a week after that. I have a sinking feeling that this is not going to go smoothly for him, and although he tells me not to worry about it, I am concerned for his well-being. I know that he's an adult (he's 25) and that he's perfectly capable of standing up for himself, and that he backs me fully in this complaint, but these are nasty people. I don't want him to lose his job, or be threatened with it. On the other hand, somebody has to stand up to these people, and that's going to be me. Gah. I'm so confused.

  • Not much else happening. The weather is lovely, the trees are in bud and blossom, there are lots of interesting things to watch on Netflix, and I'm reading a good book.

  • Apparently my brother and his wife are shouting at each other about divorce. Although I am not at all a fan of my sister-in-law despite her many kindnesses to me, I can't think that a divorce would be good for anyone at all, least of all their son.
